Free Tax Prep! Tax Center Open 4th Year!

Posted by crpic on March 6, 2014

money falling into handCRPIC’s free Tax Center to help low and moderate income families file their federal and MA state taxes opened in January for its 4th season! Last year we helped over 300 families and we are hoping to serve even more this year. The Tax Center is part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program created to help people file their taxes correctly and for free. Our preparers are all IRS-certified to ensure your taxes are done right and you get the maximum refund allowed.

The Tax Center is partially funded by United Way and is focused on boosting refunds and making sure tax filers are taking full advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child and Dependent Care credits, Child Tax credits, Education, and Retirement credits. We also check for the “Circuit Breaker” credit for MA property owners/renters 65 years old and over, and Energy Efficiency credits for eligible  MA homeowners.

This year we also have dedicated computers to help you file your taxes yourself. Our volunteers can get you started and answer questions along the way. If you have a simple return, this is a good option for you.

The Tax Center is open 4-8 pm on Thursdays and 10am-6pm on Fridays & Saturdays at 154 Moody Street in downtown Waltham. Appointments and walk-ins are welcome. For more information on what you need to bring and to make an appointment call 781-891-9559, x206.

More SkillStep Computer Classes!

Posted by crpic on March 6, 2014

DSC00801 (2)CRPIC’s SkillStep technology classes are running at full force again this Winter/Spring term! We are running classes both during the day and in the evening. This semester our beloved Sonia is teaching two classes in Spanish: one Intro to Computers class and one Intermediate class, and spots in both are at an all time premium. A Beginners class in Creole is also taught in the evening. All computer classes taught in English are nearly full, but because we have volunteer assistants to support the teachers, we can add a few more students to some of the English classes. If you are interested, please call 781-891-9559, x206.  Our SkillStep students are also eligible for our job-readiness workshops and for tutoring help with resumes and job searches. For more information about those, call 781-891-9559, x206 and ask for James.

ESOLCRPIC is offering ESOL classes again this Winter/Spring term! Right now we are offering two classes for beginner speakers and both classes are full with 20 students in each class. Once again, the registration turnout was huge! We are working with WATCH (Waltham) and Project Literacy (Watertown) to help place students who didn’t get a slot in our classes and all three programs hope to offer more classes in fall. If you would like to be on our waiting list for classes next fall, please call 781-891-9559, x206 and ask for Julie. Our ESOL students are also eligible for free technology classes and our job-readiness workshops. For more information about those classes, call 781-891-9559, x206 and ask for James.
