IBM and United Way Make Good Things Happen!

Posted by crpic on October 18, 2011

Community Care Day Volunteers

September 15th was a great day for CRPIC! Thirteen wonderful volunteers from IBM joined forces on United Way’s Community Care Day to help CRPIC get ready for the fall semester of the SkillStep Program.  IBMers completed two huge projects: prepping labs and preparing materials for all of the SkillStep classes and painting the break room and bathrooms. They were able to accomplish in one day what it would have taken us days if not weeks to do. All of their very capable and good-natured manpower made very short work of big tasks. And, of course, they had a couple of great ideas for managing our program work on our networks that they shared as well. We can’t thank you enough for all of the great work you did – we very much appreciate all of the planning, considerable elbow grease, and humor you brought to the project as well as the wonderful results. Many, many heartfelt thanks and we hope to partner with you again next fall! Many thanks to the tireless crew at United Way as well for planning this important event for nonprofits every year!

2010 Tech Buddies of the Year

Posted by crpic on December 12, 2010

Alexi Themelis (14, Belmont Hill School) is one of our 2010 Tech Buddies of the Year for his near full-time, dedicated volunteering last summer. Tech Buddies is a special program for middle and high school students who volunteer here at CRPIC in a substantive and meaningful way. Last summer Alexi logged about 20 volunteer hours/week for several weeks working on a variety of projects. He became the preferred tutor for numerous CRPIC patrons and helped many improve their skill level to the point where they were ready for our formal technology classes. He also single-handedly updated our entire snail-mailing list and email list with perseverance and precision – a difficult and tedious job, but one that left us with a much used new database. We are more than appreciative of his efforts that allow us to communicate with all of our constiuencies! Congratulations Alexi and thank you! Some of your tutees hope you will return next summer!

2010 Tech Buddies of the Year

Posted by crpic on December 12, 2010

Ethan Webster-Zinn

Ethan Webster-Zinn (14, Fessenden School) is one of our Tech Buddies of the Year for several reasons. First, unless he is away at summer camp, he typically volunteers 3 or more hours every week – that’s real committment! Second, he has become one of our best lab techs – he’s able to take down and set-up labs quickly, accurately, and dependably. Computers get moved between labs as needed, re-installed, and the hardware and software thoroughly checked – that’s serious work! Third, although he was a little apprehensive about working with our adult ESOL/technology students, he overcame his nervousness and began tutoring. He now says he especially loves helping people get their first email address and watching their amazement as they see their first sent email pop up in his inbox on his computer screen. “The world instantly gets bigger and more connected for them - in a second!”, says Ethan. Congratulations Ethan, and thank you for all you have done for CRPIC, not only this year, but for the three years you have volunteered here!
